While wedding planning isn’t always a piece of cake, there are some parts of the journey that should be — like, actually choosing the cake! A wedding is the perfect time to combine your sweet tooth with creativity, so don’t be afraid to think outside the “white tiers.” These days, from macaroon cakes to cupcake ensembles to non-traditional shapes and sizes, bakery houses have become pleasantly accommodating to making sure your visionary dream cake becomes a reality!
This week we chatted with Buttercream Bakery, a Sydney-based, family-owned business that’s known for creating cakes, cupcakes and cake pops with an artistic edge. Why do we love them? Besides the obvious deliciousness factor, Buttercream Bakery incorporates fine, hand-painted techniques that allow brides to conceptually personalise their ideas onto various cake styles including rustic-inspired, beachy boho, contemporary chic and simplistic charm...Below, we found out their story is as sweet as their creations!
COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STORY BEHIND THE BEGINNING OF BUTTERCREAM BAKERY.
I was pursuing cake-making as a hobby, baking cakes on the weekends for family and friends. I studied Graphic Design and worked in the field for several years, but in 2009 I started day-dreaming about a career change. My brother was also looking at other career prospects and wanted to run his own business, so he came to me with the idea of starting an online cake store & delivering to people’s doorsteps. Together we started Buttercream Bakery. We renovated our parent’s garage and created a small industrial kitchen and enlisted my cousin & husband to help us get our business off the ground. Armed with my hand mixer, Buttercream Bakery started with cupcakes and soon branched out into cakes, cookies, cake pops and other baked goods. In 2014, we decided to take a big leap and expand into a larger kitchen and open a store-front.
YOU'RE KNOWN FOR YOUR CRAZY BEAUTIFUL HAND-PAINTED BUTTERCREAM CAKE RANGE. SO UNIQUE! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START PRACTICING THIS TECHNIQUE?
After seeing an art exhibition, I realised how much I missed painting, but I didn't have the time to take it up anymore — being so busy with cakes. So we thought, why not turn our cakes into canvases?
IF A BRIDE IS INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH YOU FOR BAKED GOODS AND CAKES, WHAT SHOULD THEY KNOW TO BEGIN THE CONVERSATION?
The one thing they should know is that the cake is only a part of their big day and the most important thing is that they’re getting married, so we will make it a fun process for them!
WHAT'S ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE WEDDING PROJECTS YOU'VE WORKED ON?
One of our bride’s concepts for her cake was the sun rising behind flowers...It was really fun to incorporate flowers onto the cake without having them physically on there.
ARE THERE ANY WEDDING CAKE TRENDS YOU'RE LOVING AT THE MOMENT?
Painted wedding cakes! It's one way to make sure your cake is one of a kind! Also, for us, it would be fondant cakes because we have such a great selection of buttercream flavours and designs to choose from.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP IN 2016 THAT YOUR EXCITED ABOUT?
We will be launching a new range of buttercream flavours that will be available across all our baked goods — including our signature painted cakes!
WHAT'S YOUR MOTTO?
Eat the cake!!
